The arrival of a baby Bornean orangutan at the Barcelona Zoo was catalogued as a historic birth.
And it is to be celebrated, since it is a threatened and critically endangered species, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
With this little one, born on May 15, the municipal Zoo now has seven specimens of this species.

According to Antoni Alarcón, director of the Barcelona Zoo, the baby orangutan is “in perfect health” and is growing normally under the care of his mother, who was also born at the Zoo 25 years ago.
The director also reaffirmed the will and commitment of the entire Zoo team to protect and promote the “biodiversity of the planet and the protection of endangered species, such as the Bornean orangutan”.
Borneo’s endangered orangutan calf
Despite the care and effort for its conservation, there are threats surrounding this animal. With this, it is very likely that orangutans born in captivity in zoos will be released or reintroduced on Indonesian islands within a few years.
It is also noted that both the Barcelona Zoo,
together with other zoos
and the City Council, are working together in this situation.
