A new traffic light for a bike lane in Barcelona is being criticized and mocked on social networks for its incomprehensible appearance.
It is located on the Ronda de Sant Pere stretch and has been installed by the Barcelona City Council to help cyclists ride on the streets.
Despite its directional indications, the traffic light model may not be the most suitable to avoid accidents.
The bike lane traffic light in Barcelona causing confusion
The traffic light signals the passage for three directions (straight, right and left), two with two displays and the third with only one, which may cause confusion to users.
In addition, the traffic light is located in one of the corners where there is another identical traffic light that regulates cyclists riding perpendicularly.
The confusion has generated mockery on social networks, where users have compared the traffic light to “a chess game”.
The new traffic light has been installed for the section of Ronda de Sant Pere, between Girona and Roger de Llúria streets.
Cyclists using this bike lane will have to pay special attention to the traffic lights specifically placed by the Barcelona City Council to avoid accidents.
Work on new bicycle lanes to begin in January 2023
At the beginning of the year, the city council announced the start of work on five new stretches of bicycle lanes to expand the city’s cycling mobility system.
In fact, the Catalan capital already has a bicycle lane network of almost 250 kilometers.
The purpose was to expand the bicycle lane infrastructure. Therefore, it was announced that the first section of the new lanes will be located on Mallorca Street, from Clot to Cartagena.
This route will establish a horizontal axis connecting the Clot neighborhood with Sants Station, through the Eixample district, towards the Llobregat River.
The plan to expand the bike lane network included the construction of two new lanes.
The first, located on Mallorca Street between Clot and Cartagena, established a horizontal axis that connects the Clot neighborhood with Sants Station through the Eixample.
The second lane was located on Independencia Street between Meridiana Avenue and Sant Antoni Maria Claret Street, integrating a vertical itinerary that connects the bike lane coming from Parc de la Canòpia on Meridiana Avenue – Gran Via, with the bike lane section of Sant Antoni Maria Claret Street.
Barcelona continues to actively work on the expansion of its bike lane network to provide sustainable and safe mobility for cyclists.
