The Bolides and Meteorites Research Network (SPMN) of the Institute of Space Sciences (CSIC-IEEC) reported that, in the early morning of April 17, 2022, a meteorite crossed Barcelona and the sky of Catalonia at a speed of 97,000 kilometers per hour.
The meteorite was seen in the sky of our city as well as in areas of Lleida. Also in the Valencian Community, Aragon, Balearic Islands, Navarra, Region of Murcia and in the South of France.
Its luminous phase was lost at 45 kilometers above sea level.
The fireball flew over the Catalan sky at exactly 4 hours, 15 minutes and 10 seconds in the early morning.
Astrophotographer Marc Corretgé captured the image from Alpicat (Lleida).
This beautiful spectacle was seen all over Catalonia.
Meteorite in Barcelona and other places
But the record was not only on April 17, the Bolide Network had also recorded in the early morning of April 15 another meteorite, named SPMN150422C.
It crossed the north of Lanzarote at 7 hours, 23 minutes and 21 seconds.
The SPMN believes that it could have been an Alpha Scorpius of cometary origin, composed of particles of a few centimeters that leave no trace in their wake.
The Bolides and Meteorites Research Network (SPMN) has 35 stations located in different areas of the Peninsula, Balearic and Canary Islands.
The Network can detect about 4,000 fireballs per year, although it only records the most representative and luminous meteors.
You can report pictures to SPMN if you see a meteorite.
