Barcelona residents wishing to explore African culture have an exceptional opportunity ahead of them. On September 14, the Catalan capital will be transformed into the epicenter of a vibrant African festival. The event will feature a variety of interactive activities and live concerts, all completely free of charge.
The event, which will take place at 26 Creu Coberta Street, promises to be an unforgettable experience for people of all ages. Its organizers explained that it will run from 11:00 to 20:00 hours.
African culture in Barcelona
This festival focused on African culture is organized by the Africa Music and Art Festiva Association (Amafest). This is its second edition. It aims to offer a window into the vast and diverse cultural heritage of the African continent, made up of 54 countries with unique and distinct traditions. According to the association, “it will be an educational and fun experience for all ages, because African culture is one of the richest and most diverse in the world”. These types of events not only promote knowledge of other cultures, but also foster integration and respect for the different traditions that coexist in society.
One of the main attractions of the festival will be the tasting of a wide variety of typical African dishes. The continent’s cuisine is as diverse as its peoples, and attendees will have the opportunity to taste unique flavors that reflect the cultural richness of different regions and ethnic groups. Exotic dishes, full of history and tradition, will be presented to visitors, who will be able to enjoy a culinary experience that will allow them to travel through Africa through its flavors.
Fashion
In addition to gastronomy, the festival will offer a showcase of African fashion, which is recognized worldwide for its richness in fabrics and vibrant colors. Designer Veronica Bosio, of Equatoguinean origin and founder of the Waisso Clothing brand, will present her latest collection in a fashion show that will take place at 11:45 am. This fashion show will be an excellent opportunity to admire the traditional African costumes and the creativity that characterizes the designers of the continent.
Waissö was born in 2017 with the intention of paying tribute to the roots of its creator and designer, Verónica Bosio. Veronica is a textile engineer with a 15-year career as a production and quality manager in various multinational companies. Throughout her career, Veronica experienced firsthand the barriers imposed by the glass ceiling, especially due to her status as a black woman. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities and the underrepresentation of African models and designers in the fashion industry, she decided to take a bold step and create her own project: Waissö.
Since its founding, Waissö has been a platform for Veronica to express her cultural identity with pride and determination. Her brand has become a living example of her heritage and her commitment to representing and empowering African culture in the fashion world. With each design, Veronica not only honors her personal history, but also challenges established norms and opens pathways for future generations of designers who seek to break stereotypes and limitations in the industry.
Literature and music
Another highlight of the festival will be African literature, which is gaining more and more recognition internationally. Several African writers living in Barcelona will share their works with the public and participate in a Q&A at 12:30 pm. This will be a unique opportunity to discover new literary voices and explore the narratives emerging from a continent full of stories to tell.
Music, an essential element of African culture, will also be present at the festival. Owey, one of the most important DJs in Barcelona, will offer a live performance that promises to make all attendees vibrate. The day will culminate with an Afrobeat masterclass by the Wahala Dance Group at 6:00 pm. This dance group, known for its energy and passion, will guide participants through the characteristic rhythms and movements of Afrobeat, a musical genre that has gained popularity around the world for its fusion of African rhythms and contemporary sounds.
