Barcelona-El Prat Airport closed the month of May with 4,992,580 passengers, an increase of 11.5% compared to the same month in 2023. At the beginning of this year, the airport has registered 21,033,679 passengers, which is 12.8% more than in January-May 2023. According to this increase, this airport has once again reached a historic high for another consecutive month.
Passengers who traveled was a total of 3,705,519 on international flights, this represents approximately 14.4% more than those of the same month in 2023. On the other hand, 1,279,998 passengers took domestic flights, 4.1% more than in May last year.
15.6 % increase compared to last year
So far this year, the total number of passengers who have traveled on commercial flights is 20,994,368, this represents 12.8% more than January and May 2023. The total number of international passengers was 15,430,210. This translates to a 15.6% increase over the same period last year. In terms of domestic passengers, 5,564,158 passengers have passed through to May 2024, which is 5.7% more than the same date in 2023.
A total of 31,593 transactions were handled during May, an increase of 10% compared to the same month last year. Likewise, in the cumulative figure through the fifth month of the year so far this year. This figure is up to 135,619 flights, or 11.6% compared to this time last year.
Barcelona Airport: Between January and May 74,362 tons of cargo were registered
In terms of cargo, 15,805 tons of goods were transported in May, which is 17.1% more than in May 2023. This means that between the first and fifth month, 74,362 tons were registered. This is 20% more than the cumulative figure for the same period in 2023.
On the other hand, the hotel and service sectors in the city have also seen a positive impact. Joan Gaspart, president of the Barcelona Hotel Guild, said, “The increase in passengers has translated into higher hotel occupancy, exceeding 85% in many areas of the city. This is excellent news for the local economy.”

Airport authorities and tour operators are optimistic about the future. Therefore, they anticipate a record year in terms of passenger traffic and economic dynamism.
