Barcelona designated European Capital of Democracy

Barcelona designated European Capital of Democracy

In September this year, Barcelona became the first European Capital of Democracy (ECoD), an initiative supported by the Innovation in Politics Institut, the European Council and the European Commission.

The purpose of this designation is to promote citizen participation and inclusive debate in a variety of areas, including economic, technological, ecological and social.

For this reason and until October 2024, the city’s residents will have the opportunity to contribute to public debates and play an active role in making decisions that affect both the local and European level.

The technical office of the European Capital of Democracy, a collaboration between the Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona Metropolitan Strategic Plan (PEMB), is working to create spaces for reflection and to carry out participatory processes that involve citizens and foster new forms of participatory democracy.

Throughout this period, the city will host events, conferences and activities related to democratic innovation, citizen participation, culture, education and public space.

A year of participation and reflection as European Capital of Democracy

During this year of democratic capital, more than 40 local, metropolitan and international activities have been programmed. These activities are being organized by various institutions and civil organizations.

The second Deputy Mayor, Maria Eugènia Gay, announced these events last September 14 in the Saló de Cent of the City Hall.

Among the highlights scheduled are the Decidim Fest, a conference on Democracy, Technology and Collective Intelligence; the European Political Innovation Awards The Annual Innovation in Politics Awards, to be presented on April 18, 2024.

Also, The Art of Democracy exhibition, which will showcase innovative artwork based on the principle of citizen participation in May 2024; the GameJam Truth, Lies & Democracy, a 48-hour event to create video games that address the fight against Fake News scheduled for the first week of June 2024; and the ActNOW International Mayors event, an international gathering scheduled for September 2024 that will bring together mayors to discuss climate policies.

How to participate and submit proposals

Citizens are invited to participate in various initiatives throughout the year, including debates, assemblies and meetings at the European level.

To participate in these activities, citizens can register on the designated portal, subscribe to the newsletter to stay informed about the latest events and news, and sign up for any of the organized activities.

In addition, in the coming weeks, a form will be opened on the portal so that anyone can submit proposals for activities related to the European Capital of Democracy. These activities proposed by the public will be considered as of January 2024.
