From October 2021 to September 2022, the city of Barcelona appeared in almost 2.5 million mentions on social networks. However, this is 17% less than the 3 million registered a year ago.
This is according to the second digital report prepared by the consulting firm Evercom on Barcelona’s image at the international level.
The firm makes the assessment through the digital platform Digimind, with which it is possible to monitor everything that is published about the Catalan capital in social networks and digital media.
Evercom’s main objective is to promote this study in order to achieve a reputational analysis that corroborates how the city’s practices and projects are rebranding its image at the international level.
The objective is that the data obtained serve as a guide for companies and at a global level, to stimulate behaviors that elevate and reinforce the image of the city of Barcelona.
2.5 million mentions of Barcelona in networks
The report also highlighted that the main theme with which Barcelona was associated during the last year was tourism. Politics is no longer the most popular topic (it was the leading topic in 2021) and was replaced by tourism, along with other categories such as research and entrepreneurship.
According to the study, this topic accounted for 41% of the mentions. Among the most searched terms were Primavera Sound or Sagrada Familia. The revival of travel accounts for the first position, after 27% of mentions last year.
Other topics with their respective percentages
Politics 31% of the mentions; entrepreneurship 16%; research 8% and congresses 4%.
With respect to the origin of the publications, the Evercom report indicates that 69% come from outside Spain and the remaining 31% originate within the country.
The foreign country from which most mentions of Barcelona are made is the United States, which ranks first, followed by Mexico.
Other information of interest
The channels where the Catalan capital is mentioned the most are:
- Social networks with 63%, particularly through Twitter.
- Online media with 34%.
- Blogs 3%.
In terms of language, the mentions in foreign language and in Spanish stand out, each with 41%. Mentions in Catalan were 18%.
As for the months with the most mentions of Barcelona, they remained the same throughout the year.
For 2021 the highest number of mentions was made during the month of September when the primary topic was politics and related events in Barcelona.
In 2022 it was in the spotlight for issues such as its bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics, the suspension of Laura Borrás as a member of parliament and for the Diada of September 11.
