According to the Hospital Excellence Index, IEH, three of the ten best hospitals in Spain are in Barcelona.
Hospital Clínic, Hospital Vall d’Herbon and Hospital Quirónsalud.
The Hospital Excellence Index is a study that analyzes every year Spanish hospitals, both public and private, that are committed to the quality and sustainability of a universal healthcare system.
Through the IEH, the Coordenadas Institute of Governance and Applied Economics once again jointly analyzed the excellence of public and private hospitals throughout Spain.
Three of the ten best hospitals in Spain are in Barcelona
It is worth noting that Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, with a score of 0.987, was ranked as the best in Catalonia for the seventh year in a row and third in the country.
The other two Barcelona hospitals in the top ten list are the Hospital de la Vall d’Hebron with 0.976 in sixth place and the Hospital Quirónsalud de Barcelona in eighth place with 0.968.
The Fundación Jiménez Díaz ranked first with 0.996 and the Hospital Universitario La Paz second with 0.993. Both are located in Madrid.

- Gregorio Marañón University Hospital in Madrid: 0.985
- Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid: 0.983
- Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona: 0.976
- Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid: 0.972
- Hospital Quirónsalud Barcelona in Barcelona: 0.968
- Hospital Universitari i Politècnic La Fe in Valencia: 0.962
- Hospital Quirónsalud Madrid in Madrid: 0.961
The Hospital Excellence Index recognizes the best healthcare centers in the country by considering the following aspects:
- Quality of care.
- Hospital services offered.
- Commitment and interest in research.
- Well-being and patient satisfaction.
- Hospital contribution to building a sustainable universal health care system.
Likewise, Jesús Sánchez Lambás, Executive Vice President of the Coordenadas Institute, indicated that
“Although the quality of care in our hospitals is unquestionable, as well as the commitment and dedication that characterize healthcare professionals on a daily basis, the situation we are going through in hospitals and the sector due to the pandemic, made us reformulate the paradigm of excellence”.
At present, changes have been made and fundamental pillars of hospital operations, such as innovation, research and teaching, have been strengthened.
The aim was also to increasingly strengthen cross-cutting healthcare models, in order to make the most of the clinical translation of all the experience gained over so many years, with the primary aim of placing it at the service of patients and society as a whole.
