Barcelona is bidding to host the Euroleague Basketball Final Four

Barcelona is bidding to host the Euroleague basketball

Barcelona is all set to submit its bid to host the Euroleague Basketball Final Four 2025. If selected, the competition will be held at the Palau Sant Jordi.

The presentation of the candidacy is a fact. For its part, the city council insists that the event can be held for the fourth time in the Catalan capital in 2025.

If Barcelona succeeds in hosting the Euroleague, this tournament will join other top-level sporting events that will be held in the city in the coming years.

For example, in 2023 the city will host the Vuelta Ciclista a España. The Vuelta will start on August 26, with a start, a time trial and a finish in Barcelona. It will be a week of world-class cycling.

In addition, on August 22, 2024, the America’s Sailing Cup will be held in the city, which will put Barcelona at the world epicenter of the sport, as was the case with the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.

In fact, the America’s Cup is the third most important sporting event in the world, after the Olympic Games and the World Cup.

And as for the World Cup, Barcelona also aspires to host the biggest soccer event in 2030, if Spain and Portugal’s bid is successful.

In this scenario, both the Camp Nou and the RCDE Stadium in Cornellà de Llobregat would be part of the list of 15 stadiums proposed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation for the world event.

Basketball Final Four in Barcelona

Among other reasons, the city was postulated to host the Final Four in 2025, in order to have enough time to remodel the Palau Sant Jordi and be able to meet the technical requirements of the Euroleague and the seating capacity.

Regarding the 2023 Euroleague Final Four, it was to be held in Kaunas (Lithuania) where basketball is breathed.

However, the refusal of the municipality to pay the money that would allow it to receive the approval of the Euroleague, made Dubai the city of choice.

If so, it would be the first time that a basketball final four would be played outside of Europe.

The choice of Dubai could also be related to the likely future change of Euroleague sponsor: Emirates Airlines could replace Turkish Airlines.

Barcelona’s bid to host the Final Four is being worked on jointly by the Catalan Basketball Federation, the Euroleague, the Spanish Basketball Federation and a private company led by former Barça player Bojan Bodiroga.

If Barcelona is chosen, the Final Four would cost four million euros, not including the refurbishment of the Palau Sant Jordi.
