barcelona is committed to inclusive playgrounds for everyone

Barcelona’s commitment to inclusive gaming

In the heart of Barcelona, the right to play has become a priority, extending to every corner of the city. Barcelona is committed to creating accessible and inclusive children’s spaces. These places are not only for the recreation of the little ones, but also to encourage development and shared learning.

For the city, every playground should be a place where all children, regardless of their abilities, enjoy the freedom and fun that the outdoors has to offer. Accessible playgrounds are designed with the goal that any child, with or without disabilities, can feel autonomous. Basic activities such as swinging, sliding down a slide or exploring a circuit have been ensured for everyone.

What makes an accessible playground special?

Can you imagine a space where every game is designed to include everyone? That is the proposal of the accessible play areas in Barcelona. More than just a set of swings and slides, accessible itineraries have been considered, ensuring that every child can move freely and without barriers.

For children with visual or intellectual disabilities, tactile paths and visually contrasted safety areas are essential. This ensures that everyone can find their way around easily and play on equal terms. This initiative is not just about complying with regulations; it seeks to go further and create spaces that are genuinely understandable and comfortable.

A shared effort and a clear goal

Barcelona now has 165 accessible play areas, of which 69 are fully accessible. This achievement is not a neck-stopping, but a response to the city’s commitment to equity and inclusive play. By 2030, every neighborhood in Barcelona should have at least one fully accessible area, underscoring the City Council’s clear objective to promote universal play.

Two examples of inclusive play areas

The promotion of new areas has been key. A municipal competition seeks to continue transforming old spaces into inclusive areas. Now, two new additions have caused a sensation in the local environment:

1. Gardens of Celestina Vigneaux (La Bordeta)

These gardens extend over 800 m², offering an area rich in inclusiveness. Elements such as a multipurpose swing, zip line with harness chair and trampolines guarantee fun for everyone. The Xera association and the Accessibility and Independent Living Network (XAVI) collaborated in its design. The result: a space that serves as a model for accessibility and inclusion.

2. Emili Mira Square (Sant Gervasi – la Bonanova)

With an area of 550 m², this square was renovated by incorporating swings with harness, rocking chairs, trampolines and sensory elements. Contrasting pavements and Braille signage were introduced, demonstrating that accessibility details make a difference. Collaboration with the Guimbarda school introduced improvements such as water fountains and benches for companions.

Find your accessible park in Barcelona

For those looking for a particular space that meets their needs, Barcelona has simplified the search. An online search engine displays up-to-date information on all accessible playgrounds. With this tool, every family can find their perfect corner for recreation.

Barcelona is thus positioned as an international example in terms of accessibility and gaming rights, demonstrating that when working for inclusion and equal opportunities, we all win.
