Barcelona is one of the cities with the most traffic jams in the world

In Barcelona drivers waste twice as much time in traffic jams compared to those in Madrid, for this and other reasons, the Catalan capital is one of the cities with the most traffic jams in the world.

This was revealed in a study by the company INRIX, which through its Global Traffic Scorecard can provide detailed information on transportation in cities and rank the cities with the most congested traffic in the world.

The company analyzes the evolution of the world’s traffic every year.

Based on the 2022 analysis, it concluded that Barcelona ranks 99th in the world, consolidating its position as the Spanish city with the most congested roads.

Specifically, drivers in Barcelona spent an average of 46 hours in traffic jams during 2022.

The city of Madrid, on the other hand, ranked 287th, with its drivers losing an average of 26 hours of their time.

The cities with the most traffic jams in the world

While Barcelona is one of the 100 most congested cities in the world, there are others with shocking figures.

Among them is London, which turned out to be the city with the highest number of traffic jams. In fact, it is the most congested city in the world and where its drivers spent an average of 156 hours queuing in traffic last year.

In second place is Chicago in the United States, with 155 average hours lost on the road, and Paris in France, in third place with 138 hours.

The data also highlights Istanbul (Turkey), where drivers face an annual average of 142 hours of traffic jams and a congestion rate of 62%.

With respect to Spanish cities

After Barcelona, the Spanish cities with the most traffic jams are Palma de Mallorca with 59 hours per year of congestion, Granada with 50 hours of traffic jams and Tenerife with 48 hours.

Ciudad Real (autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha) also has 37 hours lost on average per driver.

It is followed by Talavera de la Reina (province of Toledo), with 36 hours. The capital cities of Valencia and Palma also stand out with an average of over 30 hours per driver.

Fewer accidents?

Likewise, INRIX in its annual ranking highlights that the new traffic laws and regulations implemented in Spain have managed to reduce traffic conflicts.

In fact, the study concludes that Spain is the country in the world where traffic accidents have been most successfully reduced by 7% in 2022.

Also, Cadiz is the Spanish city with the least traffic, so its inhabitants only lose about 25 hours a year in traffic jams.
