As you read it. Barcelona now has a Statue of Liberty. It is located in the Arús Library and is a true gem as one of only three replicas of the iconic 19th century New York figure.
The Arús Library is located at number 26 Passeig de Sant Joan. The building is distinguished for being full of symbolic elements and mysterious Masonic allusions.
But above all it is distinguished by the “liberty illuminating the world“, a faithful reproduction of the famous statue of Liberty by Frédéric Auguste Bertholdi.
It is located at the top of the stairs at the entrance of the library at the second entrance door to the building.
Barcelona already has a Statue of Liberty: One more replica?
Maybe you’ll think about it. But no, it’s not just any reproduction. It is one of only three that were made at the end of the 19th century.
The largest and first is the one in New York on Liberty Island. Built in 1886 and standing 46 meters high, it is a World Heritage Site.
The second reproduction is the Paris reproduction of 1889, smaller (11.5 meters) and located in the Musée d’Orsay.
The third and last, and in fact the smallest of all, is ours, that of the Arús Library, which dates from 1894. It is no more than two meters high and is signed by sculptor Ll. Razzuoli.
In his right hand he carries a torch and in his left a book with the legend “Alma libertas”.
