The Barcelona City Council is preparing to start an ambitious transformation project in the Ronda de Sant Antoni. At an information session open to the neighborhood, it was announced that the work will begin after Christmas, specifically on January 8. These large-scale improvements are designed to revitalize this iconic city thoroughfare and create a friendlier space for residents and visitors. Below, we break down the highlights of this exciting renovation in several subheadings.
Sixteen Months of Significant Change
The renovation of the Ronda de Sant Antoni is a project that will require considerable time and resources. With a planned duration of sixteen months, this transformation promises to completely change the appearance and functionality of the area. 11.6 million will be invested in this ambitious undertaking, with the promise of an impressive result.
A Focus on Public Space and Greenery
The project will be executed in accordance with the previously approved and awarded project. The main objective of this approach is to favor citizen uses and increase the green areas in the Ronda de Sant Antoni. The project will cover a large area of 16,300 square meters, which will allow the creation of more attractive and functional areas for the community.
A New Single Platform Plaza
One of the most notable changes will be the creation of a new single platform plaza in the space between Villarroel and Floridablanca. This space will be completely pacified and free of vehicles, which will promote a safer and more comfortable environment for pedestrians.
The superblock of Sant Antoni and the integral maintenance plan
In addition, it will be linked to the Plaza del Pes de la Palla, where a new children’s play area will be installed, providing families with a place to enjoy and relax.
Public Transportation Optimization
The project also takes into account the improvement of public transportation in the area. The creation of an exclusive downhill bus lane from Villarroel to Comte d’Urgell is foreseen. This measure will resolve and eliminate the problem of bus traffic in the opposite direction that currently affects Comte d’Urgell street. In addition, the bus lane will be located on the loading and unloading curb side, a decision made in response to the request of local merchants.
Promoting Sustainable Mobility
Sustainable mobility is a fundamental pillar of this renovation project. Bicycles will be allowed to circulate along the entire Ronda de Sant Antoni, always maintaining the right of way for pedestrians. This measure encourages the adoption of greener and healthier means of transportation in the area.
The Festa Major de Sant Antoni begins on January 13th.
An Extra Touch of Green
The intervention in this section also contemplates an increase in vegetation. Drainage spaces will be increased to facilitate the growth of existing trees, and 46 new trees will be added, bringing the total number to 150. This commitment to vegetation will not only improve air quality but also further beautify the Ronda de Sant Antoni.
Connection and Additional Renewal
To complete the project, it includes the connection of the green axis of Tamarit street and the renovation of Dubte square, which promises to further enhance the urban experience in the area.
In short, the Ronda de Sant Antoni is on the verge of an exciting transformation that will positively affect the lives of Barcelona’s residents and visitors. With a focus on public space, sustainable mobility and nature, this project promises a more vibrant and attractive future for this important artery of the city.
