For the celebration of the 37th edition of the America’s Cup, Barcelona presents its mobility strategy. To do so, the Ajuntament recommends reaching the beach by public transport or on foot. Two large park-and-ride lots will be provided. This celebration will take place between August 22 and October 27, which will be a challenge to organize of the first magnitude with the objective of making access to the waterfront easier.
Mobility strategy facilitates access for people wishing to watch the competition
The organization of the event seeks to facilitate the access of people who wish to watch the sporting competition and those who want to use the beach area for common use. This is especially true for the residents of the adjacent neighborhoods. That is, Barceloneta, located in the district of Ciutat Vella and the Olympic Village of Poblenou and Poblenou in the district of Sant Martí. In addition to workers in nearby areas, as well as the Port Vell.
It is also planned to guarantee Urban Distribution of Goods (DUM) activities and, mainly, it is not foreseen that any streets will be closed to traffic. With all this, the Barcelona City Council announced this Monday, June 10, the specific mobility plan for the celebration of the America’s Cup Sailing.
Use of sustainable means
The initial recommendation is based on the use of sustainable means to reach areas where the competition can be followed. That is, especially in the Plaza del Mar in Barceloneta and Bogatell beach.
In these places, two specific areas will be set up, so that the general public can follow the evolution of the space races, which will have giant screens. So, it must be done by sustainable means, it will be reached on foot, by bicycle or public transport. This means that there will be restrictions on the use of private vehicles, motorcycles and cars.
The City Council has prepared a series of measures in its mobility strategy.
It should be noted that the City Council has prepared a series of measures in these areas such as walking, travel by private vehicle, travel by bicycle or VMP. And, of course, very important are the guarantees of access for workers and neighbors.
Of course, it must be taken into account that the regatta calendar does not foresee competition on two important dates. These dates coincide with the celebration of the America’s Sailing Cup, that is, the National Day and the Mercè.
It should be noted that this mobility strategy does not plan to hold any regattas on September 11 or from September 20 to 24. However, the dates mentioned appear in the booking calendar. This is because the development of the competition is subject to the state of the sea and the wind. Therefore, the organization has a margin of dates to reserve in order to make changes on the fly.
