Barcelona is getting ready to host the America’s Cup, one of the most important global sporting events of the year. To ensure the success of this competition, the Barcelona City Council has allocated 170,594 euros to strengthen its IT infrastructure.
The initiative, executed by the company Manteniment i Operacions d’Infraestructures, aims to improve connectivity and technological infrastructure in several strategic areas of the city.
The project, supervised by the Institut Municipal d’Informàtica, involves the installation of fiber optics in critical areas, from Plaça del Mar to Port Olímpic, covering important stretches of Barcelona’s beaches.
The fiber optic network, due to be completed by June, will extend along the coast, strengthening communication capacity and ensuring reliable connectivity during the event.
Barcelona strengthens its IT infrastructure
The plan details the trunk extension of fiber optic cables through existing conduits in beaches and sewers.
New pipelines will be built in specific sections, ensuring a solid infrastructure for the needs of the America’s Cup. In total, 208 meters of new ducts and more than 4,800 meters of fiber optics with different capacities will be installed.
In addition to improving the physical infrastructure, advanced technologies such as smart cells or mini-stations will be implemented to improve coverage and deploy dense communications networks.
Noise sensors, routers, transceiver modules and junction boxes will also be installed in specific areas. These measures seek not only to improve connectivity during the America’s Cup, but also to leave a beneficial technological legacy for the city.
The project, which is part of the comprehensive preparation for the America’s Cup, has already been studied in detail by Cubic Estudi d’Enginyeria, a specialized firm that has provided a comprehensive report.
This technical document is essential to ensure that the telecommunications networks meet the necessary standards for the event.
Total investment
The total investment of 170,594 euros comes from the budget of the public company Barcelona d’Infraestructures Municipals (BIMSA), which manages these infrastructures and temporarily cedes them for the organization of the America’s Cup.
Once the regatta is over, these infrastructures will become part of the Institut Municipal d’Informàtica.
The company Manteniment i Operacions d’Infraestructures, in charge of executing this project, is part of a business pool and is chaired by Ramón Juan Sagarra Rius. Its experience and trajectory in the telecommunications field support the successful execution of this project of vital importance for the city.
Barcelona is preparing by investing in technological infrastructures that will benefit the city in the long term. The combination of fiber optics, advanced technologies and careful planning will ensure that Barcelona shines not only at the sporting event, but also on the global technology stage.
