The Barcelona City Council has started an interesting pilot test in the Ciutat Vella district, where it is replacing all the garbage cans with new ones that have a larger capacity. They are innovative solutions both to address litter-related problems and as an “anti-gull” method.
The renewal of the garbage cans is part of the new cleaning contract and 430 have already been replaced, while another 1,074 are planned to be replaced in the coming months, approximately until March.
The new garbage cans, apart from being larger, are designed to be more ergonomic and practical.
They are better protected and have solutions that prevent the entry of bulky elements and reduce corrosion of materials, such as rust. They are also equipped with sensors to detect the filling level and improve waste management.
Anti-gull garbage cans and large-capacity garbage cans
However, the most outstanding innovation is the incorporation of two types of special garbage cans: “anti-gull” garbage cans and large capacity bins with self-compacting systems.
The first type, “anti-gull” litter garbage cans, are designed with a side opening to prevent seagulls from emptying them, a common problem in coastal areas where seagulls often flit around in search of food in garbage containers.
This solution is being tested in the Plaça de la Gardunya and could help reduce litter scattered on the streets.
The second type of large capacity garbage cans with self-compacting systems will be installed in places with high traffic in the public space, such as Avenida de la Catedral, La Rambla or Plaza del Mar.
These garbage cans automatically compact garbage, allowing for more efficient use of space and reducing the frequency of emptying.
Waste management plan
These initiatives are part of Pla Endreça, which seeks to improve waste management and cleanliness in the Ciutat Vella district. The replacement of the garbage cans also aims to increase waste collection in the area by 8%.
Not only does this help keep the streets cleaner, but it can also help reduce the city’s seagull problem.
The renovation of litter garbage cans and the implementation of these innovative solutions not only improve the aesthetics and cleanliness of Ciutat Vella’s streets, but also have a positive impact on the quality of life of Barcelona’s residents and visitors.
In addition, these improvements fit into the city’s broader efforts to address trash and waste management issues.
As a result, this pilot initiative could serve as an inspiration for other cities struggling with similar litter and seagull problems in their urban areas.
