According to Prabhakar Raghavan, senior vice president at Google, 40 percent of Generation Z uses TikTok as a source of information, and of all users, 76 percent say the app is what inspired them to travel.
But what are the destinations that most captured the attention of TikTok users?
The surprising result revealed that Barcelona, the Catalan capital, leads the ranking as the most popular destination on TikTok, with more than 24 billion visits.
This Mediterranean city has captivated Generation Z and has become an inexhaustible source of inspiration for travelers on the platform.
And how was this conclusion reached? Travel company Cruise Croatia conducted an analysis of TikTok views in 135 of the world’s largest cities over a four-month period from early March to early July.
In addition to determining that Barcelona was the most interesting place to travel, they also determined that in the age of the pandemic, the social network Tik Tok has become a primary source of inspiration for travelers.
Barcelona: top destination of interest on TikTok
Why Barcelona? The answer could lie in the uniqueness of the city. Barcelona is famous for its iconic buildings designed by Antoni Gaudí, such as the majestic Sagrada Familia.
Its beachfront location makes it an attractive place for beach lovers, while its world-renowned dining scene and nightlife attract a wide audience.
The city also hosts renowned cultural events and festivals, such as Primavera Sound and Sonar, which generate constant interest among young Generation Z travelers.
On TikTok, the hashtag #barcelonathingstodo is particularly popular among Generation Z users, demonstrating their enthusiasm for exploring this city and sharing their experiences on the platform.
In second place, we find New York City, a destination that continues to be a magnet for travelers. TikTok users, both residents and visitors, search for tips and recommendations about the Big Apple on the platform.
Paris ranks third on the list of most popular destinations on TikTok. An ongoing fascination with fashion, along with the recent popularity of TV series set in the city, such as the revival of “Gossip Girl” and “Emily in Paris,” have helped keep the French capital on the Generation Z radar.
By continent
Europe stands out in this ranking, with five of its cities occupying the top six places. This trend highlights the growing popularity of European destinations among young travelers, which has led to a “Euro Summer” renaissance.
