Barcelona will have the metro service open during 67 hours

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has announced that the city’s metro will run for 67 consecutive hours starting at 5 a.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2023, until midnight on Monday, January 1, 2024.

In this way, the City of Barcelona is preparing to welcome the New Year in an exceptional way, giving citizens and visitors the opportunity to enjoy the festivities without worrying about how to return home.

This decision aims to ensure a fast and safe method of transportation for everyone within Barcelona and its metropolitan area, especially on a night that has historically seen an increase in traffic accidents.

Subway service open for 67 hours at the end of the year

From 9 p.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday, trains will run at 4.5-minute intervals on lines L1 and L3, 6.5-minute intervals on lines L4 and L5, and 8-minute intervals on line L2. Between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., trains will run at a frequency of 9.5 minutes on lines L1, L4 and L5, and 11 minutes on lines L2 and L3.

One of the most anticipated celebrations in Barcelona is the welcoming of the new year on Avinguda Maria Cristina. This event will include fireworks and a show of 470 drones illuminating the sky of Montjuïc.

To facilitate access to this celebration, TMB recommends using the metro, specifically Espanya station, with lines L1 and L3, and other nearby stations such as Hostafrancs, Tarragona, Rocafort and Poble Sec.

During New Year’s Eve, TMB will also increase the number of buses that will operate throughout the night.

In addition, it has been announced that the night buses offered by the Generalitat in Barcelona and in 17 municipalities in the area will maintain their services normally from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., with a frequency every 20 minutes, as they do the rest of the year.

Safe mobility strategy

This reinforcement of public transportation services is part of a comprehensive strategy to enjoy the festivities in a safe and sustainable manner.

The Autoritat del Transport Metropolità (ATM) has also detailed the timetables for Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC) and Rodalies de Catalunya trains during these festivities.

In addition to New Year’s Eve, during the night of Epiphany (January 5), metro, FGC and streetcar services will operate until 2 a.m., following their usual holiday eve schedule. Rodalies Renfe will maintain its regular working hours.

TMB’s Nitbus service, meanwhile, will continue to operate according to its usual schedule, from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., every 20 minutes, as it does throughout the year.
