The oldest swimming pool in Barcelona, the art-déco Escullera pool of the Club Natació Barcelona, CNB, will reopen in 2023 completely renovated. It will be the only indoor pool in the city where Olympic diving can be practiced.
After being abandoned since 2017, its recovery is part of the Club’s 12 million budget refurbishment plan for its facilities.
Officially, the CNB announced that it will begin work to recover the mythical Escullera pool, perhaps the most beautiful in the city.
It was inaugurated in 1922 and is the second oldest in Spain to have warm, covered seawater. The first was that of Sabadell in 1918.
Before these pools existed, sports were practiced in the sea.
The recovery of the oldest swimming pool in Barcelona
Its reopening will allow Barcelona to train more athletes in Olympic trampoline diving. The Escullera pool will allow this training.
Escullera means in Catalan escollera. A set of blocks placed on the seabed to protect a seawall from the effects of waves.
In this sense, the Escullera pool (a block of rock built on the ground in a neighborhood that was won to the sea), is the best example of a place that has withstood the water and the adversities of time.
All citizens, and especially professional athletes, are looking forward to the reopening.
It has never sunk. Now it will be reborn with more strength.
