In the midst of the consumerist fever of Black Friday, Poble-sec offers an alternative that invites reflection on the real need for everything we buy. Bibliocosas, promoted by the Cooperasec association, is presented as an innovative and sustainable option to compulsive consumption by offering users the possibility of borrowing various household objects.
Inaugurated last Saturday in the same building as the neighborhood library (Blai 34), Bibliocosas is proposed as a space for the loan of sporadic household objects.
With a catalog that already includes 45 objects in various categories, ranging from a drill to a photocopier, the initiative seeks to encourage new uses for everyday objects and reduce the generation of unnecessary waste.
How Bibliocosas Works
The dynamics of Bibliocosas is simple and effective. Users can browse the catalog of items available online, ranging from do-it-yourself tools to household appliances and other commonly used items.
This service not only helps to reduce waste generation, but also extends the useful life of the products.
By making use of the object library, each product used translates into a reduction of waste generated. This approach respects the planet and promotes environmental sustainability.
In addition, the initiative encourages giving objects a second life, extending their usefulness and preventing them from reaching the end of their useful life prematurely.
Economic and social benefits of object lending
One of the highlights of Bibliocosas is the cost savings for users. The price of the loan is considerably less than 10% of the purchase cost of the object. This economic advantage is in addition to the environmental and social benefits offered by the initiative.
Sharing objects among the community not only contributes to the reduction of waste generation, but also facilitates interaction among neighbors, fostering the creation of new social ties. Bibliocosas presents itself as an alternative to the fever of consumerism, empowering the community to adopt more sustainable and conscious practices.
Participation and collaboration in the project
The implementation of Bibliocosas has been possible thanks to the support of organizations such as Cooperasec, Nusos, Rezero, and a group of volunteers from the Poble-sec neighborhood.
The project has been supported by the Barcelona City Council through Barcelona Activa.
Background and other examples in Barcelona
Bibliocosas joins the list of similar initiatives that have emerged in Barcelona in recent years. Recalling the start of the Biblioteca de les Coses in January 2020 in the Sant Martí neighborhood, this idea has inspired similar projects in different parts of Barcelona.
