The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda has given the green light to the tender for the drafting of the construction project for the extension of the Ronda Litoral of Barcelona between Can Tunis and Morrot.
This initiative aims to improve the current road accesses to the port of Barcelona and lighten traffic on a three-kilometer stretch that is often congested due to heavy truck traffic entering and leaving the port facilities.
The extension of the Ronda Litoral will add an additional lane in each direction, which in most of the route will mean the creation of a fourth lane.
The central area of the ring road has enough space to implement this additional lane, one of which is expected to be dedicated to heavy vehicles.
In addition, the accesses that connect with two entrances to the docks of the Port of Barcelona will be refurbished, which will increase the entry and exit capacity for trucks and reduce the queues that affect general traffic on the ring road.
The investment to expand the Ronda Litoral de Barcelona
The project, which is estimated to cost around 37 million euros, includes the construction of large traffic circles at the connections with port gates 28 and 29, located at the Zona Franca promenade and the Montjuïc cemetery, respectively.
These traffic circles will facilitate traffic flow and connections, thus improving mobility in the area.
It is important to note that this extension project does not affect the reform of the adjacent section of the Ronda Litoral that borders Montjuïc, known as the Morrot.
This other action, which also requires the agreement of the City Council and the port, has been pending for years and the possibility of building a second viaduct to double the capacity in that section has been considered.
The future schedule
The Ministry of Transport forecasts that the drafting of the construction project will take about two years, followed by a period of between 18 and 24 months for the works.
The extension of the Ronda Litoral is expected to significantly improve traffic flow in the area and facilitate access to the port for the transport of goods and heavy vehicles.
This initiative seeks to optimize the road infrastructure in Barcelona and contribute to greater efficiency in the transportation of goods in the port area.
It was also reported that there are other proposals yet to be finalized. They are aimed at planning surface actions in order to be able to undertake a more extensive urban redevelopment. This phase of the project could include the relocation of the Morrot railway station, among other details.
