Traveling by air is a process filled with tedious controls and baggage scanners. But this will change at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport. It has been announced that from 2024, passengers will no longer have to remove liquids or electronic devices from their bags at the security checkpoint.
Barcelona Airport Director Eva Valenzuela revealed this new measure that aims to make the travel experience smoother and less stressful.
This initiative was previously anticipated by Aena
which announced the implementation of more advanced machines in all security controls to simplify this process.
Barcelona’s El Prat airport, a milestone in air safety
The implementation of X-ray scanners capable of generating 3D images marks a milestone in the evolution of airport security.
The resolution of these images allows detailed inspection of the contents of suitcases without the need to open them, which means significant time savings and reduced discomfort for travelers.
This change will be particularly noticeable during the high season, when the main Spanish airports, including El Prat, experience a significant increase in the flow of tourists, resulting in long lines and chaotic situations.
The new system will streamline the screening process, preventing travelers from being forced to unpack amidst the hustle and bustle of the airport.
Eva Valenzuela emphasized that this change will be implemented initially in Terminal 2 before next summer and will be gradually extended to Terminal 1.

The director stressed the importance of this transformation, as security screening has historically been one of the points that generate the most friction among passengers.
Passengers transported
In November 2023, passenger traffic at El Prat exceeded pre-pandemic figures for the first time, reaching 3.8 million, an increase of 4.3% compared to the same month in 2019.
These data are indicative of a notable recovery in the aviation industry. Throughout 2023, the airport has offered 50 destinations, surpassing the 47 destinations offered in 2019.
How to get to Barcelona El Prat Airport
This change in security screening translates into more efficient and comfortable travel for passengers and a transformation of the aviation industry.
With the steady increase in the number of travelers, these innovations are crucial to ensure a safe and hassle-free travel experience.
The implementation of the new security screening machines promises to reduce queues and improve efficiency, thus contributing to El Prat Airport’s reputation as a key connection point and facilitating traveler mobility in the heart of Barcelona.
The expectation is that this measure will serve as a model for other airports.
