Cap Butaca Buida: an unprecedented theatrical challenge in BCN

Catalonia is preparing for a historic event in the world of the performing arts. Under the name “Cap Butaca Buida” (No Empty Seat), the region aims to reach an unprecedented milestone: to fill all the seats in Catalan theaters on March 16, 2024.

This challenge, backed by Adetca, Time Out, the Catalan Corporation of Audiovisual Media (CCMA), the Government of Catalonia, the Barcelona Provincial Council and the Barcelona City Council, aims to turn Catalonia into the world capital of the performing arts.

The ambitious challenge of Cap Butaca Buida

This initiative was born with a unique ambition: to make history and become the first Theater Day in Catalonia, an annual celebration comparable to Sant Jordi, but dedicated to the performing arts.

The proposal is simple but challenging: to achieve a historic “sold out” in all Catalan theaters, filling every available seat.

The success of “Cap Butaca Buida” depends to a large extent on the active participation of civil society. The campaign invites everyone to become the protagonist of the largest theatrical performance ever staged in Catalonia.

The public is expected to choose their seat and share the challenge with friends, family and colleagues.

The idea behind “Cap Butaca Buida” is to create an event similar to Sant Jordi, but instead of highlighting books, the focus will be on the theatrical texts and the artists who bring them to the stage.

A numerical target

With a minimum of 25,456 seats available at participating theaters, the campaign seeks to fill all of these seats in a single day: March 16, 2024.

This initiative is not only intended to be a quantitative achievement, but also a significant event that marks the beginning of the events celebrating World Theater Week.

In addition to ticket sales to ensure a full house in Catalan theaters, March 16 will be filled with activities related to theater and those who make this art form possible.

In addition, “Cap Butaca Buida” has a solidarity component, since 2% of the proceeds will go to Pallasos Sense Fronteres, an NGO co-founded by the clown Tortell Poltrona.

The support of personalities and entities

During the public presentation of the initiative, prominent figures such as Isabel Vidal, president of Adetca; Eduard Voltes, of Time Out; Rosa Romà, president of the CCMA; Xavier Marcé, councilor of Culture of the Barcelona City Council; Aïda Llauradó, deputy of the Culture Area of the Barcelona Provincial Council; and the Minister of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Natàlia Garriga, supported the campaign.

March 16, 2024 will mark the beginning of what aspires to become a National Theater Day in Catalonia once a year in Catalonia.
