The summer of 2024 promises to be spectacular on the beaches of Catalonia, especially those that have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag distinction.
This recognition, awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education, distinguishes beaches and harbors that meet strict criteria for environmental quality, safety and services.
In Catalonia, numerous beaches from the Costa Brava to Terres de l’Ebre have been recognized for their excellence, providing a perfect environment to enjoy the sea and the sun.
What is the Blue Flag?
The Blue Flag award is one of the most relevant recognitions worldwide in terms of environmental quality and services of beaches and ports. Created in 1985, the main objective of this program is to promote sustainable development in marine and freshwater areas.
To obtain a Blue Flag, beaches must meet these stringent criteria:
Environmental information and education
This criterion includes the presence of informative signs that educate visitors about the local flora, fauna, and ecosystems, as well as the rules of conduct to preserve the environment. It also involves the organization of educational activities and the availability of updated information on water quality.
Water quality
To receive the Blue Flag, the water quality at the beach must be excellent throughout the bathing season. Periodic tests are conducted to ensure that the water meets international standards of purity and safety.
Environmental management
The awarded beaches must comply with all current environmental legislation. This includes proper waste management, protection of coastal ecosystems and implementation of sustainable practices that minimize human impact on the environment.
Security and services
This criterion covers the existence of safe and easy access to the beach, adequate facilities (such as toilets and showers), lifeguard and lifeguard services, and accessibility for people with disabilities.
