After the end-of-year holidays, the Barcelona City Council is collecting some 9,351 fir trees to be recycled by bears at the zoo.
Most of these trees will be composted, but a large portion is destined for the animals at the city zoo.
Most local parks and gardens shred trees to transform them into plant material to protect flowerbeds.
The shredding generates a mulch for the city’s flowerbeds to keep the soil moist and prevent weeds from growing.
The other trees will be part of the environment for the zoo’s beautiful grizzly bears to play and stimulate their development.
Between January 7 and 17, 2022, the Barcelona City Council set up 227 points throughout the city. In them, people left their Christmas trees after the holidays were over.
This year they managed to collect 800 more trees than were collected in 2020, for a total of 9,351 fir trees.
Christmas fir trees recycled by bears at the zoo
The selected fir trees are brought by a zoo van to the enclosure.
Mammal conservation experts say that these Christmas vegetables are a joy for wolves, elephants, lions, bears and other felines.
Thanks to them they can strengthen their sense of smell, take care of their teeth and digestive system, feel textures and learn to mark territory.
What they do indicate is that the fir trees are not offered to herbivorous animals, because although they are washed they can carry toxic pesticides that affect these species.
