From February 21 to 26, 2023, the City and Science Biennial returns in its third edition, one of the most important and outstanding events of scientific culture in Barcelona.
In addition to round tables, debates, concerts, cinema, theater, performances, art installations, among other events, the novelty of this year’s edition is that for the first time the Biennial will be held simultaneously in Barcelona and Madrid.
The contest aims to bring knowledge and science closer to the public, as well as to promote critical thinking.
It also aims to explore the relationship between humans and the natural environment and to strengthen the links between science and other disciplines.
The Biennial is at the center of the reflection on the concept of living by taking advantage of the opportunities offered by science as a response to the challenges of today.
These are the four thematic axes of the City and Science Biennial
They are inspired by life, the central theme of this year’s edition of the event.
Living in the city
Currently, more than half of the population lives in urban environments. It is therefore necessary to establish new relationships between human activity, biodiversity and ecosystems. In addition, cities play a fundamental role in combating climate change and are a privileged scenario to act on the basis of scientific knowledge.
Living in equity
This axis revolves around the search for equal rights, public health, dignified aging, respect for the environment, among other aspects. Equality in society and in science is a challenge that must be addressed.
Living with science
The aim is to take a look at the life of scientists and the methods and procedures they use to generate scientific knowledge and citizen participation.
Living creativity
This axis aims to make evident the interactions between science and art, in order to respond to current problems where creativity can play a key role.
The program of the City and Science Biennial
The Barcelona venue of la Bienal brings this year a varied program that will take place in the Ciutat Vella district. Two hundred participants and about seventy activities are expected to take place.
Among the highlights are the opening ceremony to be held on Tuesday, February 21, where Josep Perelló and chef Ada Parellada will talk about what it is like to live from the kitchen.
Another activity to highlight is the Citizen Science Day (Wednesday, February 22).
On February 25, the Science Night will be held with a series of scientific and recreational activities that seek to bring science closer to everyone.
