City Hall activates nighttime heat wave alert

Heat plan

The alert phase for torrid nights in the framework of the Calor plan in Barcelona has been activated due to the forecast that night temperatures will reach 26 degrees Celsius for much of the night. According to the weather forecast, this phase will remain active at least until today, Wednesday, August 21.

The activation of this phase is due to the increase in night temperatures, which will remain high between 24:00 and 6:00 hours. This situation alerts the Center for Emergency and Social Emergencies of Barcelona (CUESB), which is prepared to intervene if necessary, either through transfers of vulnerable people or through other specific measures.

Heat plan

In the context of the Calor plan, the CUESB has implemented a series of preventive and support actions aimed at the most vulnerable people. These measures include intensified monitoring through the care services of the Municipal Institute of Social Services (IMSS) and telecare services, with the aim of identifying and assisting individuals and families in situations of high vulnerability.

In addition, whenever possible, measures are put in place to prevent these people from having to leave their homes during the hottest hours of the day. These measures include the provision of fans and personalized home care. In cases of social urgency, the CUESB may also extend the offer of overnight stays and, if an alert is received from the public, inspections may be carried out on public roads or in homes. If deemed necessary, the possibility of providing shelter in the Short Stay Service (SEB) will be evaluated.

In addition, the CUESB sends messages to municipal social service users who have been identified as particularly vulnerable, offering them recommendations and advice on how to protect themselves from extreme heat.

Prevention and care

The main objective of the Calor plan is to mitigate the negative effects of extreme heat on the health of the population, especially on the most vulnerable people, such as the elderly, infants and those suffering from chronic diseases. It has been proven that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can have serious health consequences, so it is crucial to take preventive measures.

Between June 15 and September 15, the preventive phase of the Calor plan, which includes the Climate Shelter Network, is activated. During this period, the municipal teams in charge of prevention and intervention remain on alert, ready to activate specific resources in case heat wave alerts are issued. These resources include the opening of air-conditioned spaces for citizens, such as libraries, civic centers and other public places.

Recommendations

To protect against extreme heat, it is recommended to control the temperature at home by lowering the blinds during the day and opening the windows at night to cool the environment. It is advisable to use fans, air conditioning or fans, and to spend at least two hours a day in air-conditioned places.

It is also recommended to cool off with frequent showers or by using wet towels. In the street, it is suggested to avoid direct sun exposure by wearing a cap, hat or umbrella. In addition, wear light, light-colored clothing and stay in the shade whenever possible.

Carrying water and drinking frequently is essential to avoid dehydration. It is advisable to wet your face and, if necessary, your clothes to keep cool. Special care should be taken when traveling by car during the hottest hours, avoiding staying in vehicles with the windows closed.

Limiting physical activity and avoiding going out of the house during the hottest hours are other important measures. As for diet, it is essential to stay well hydrated, drinking water and fruit juices. It is important to avoid both alcohol and very hot or high-calorie foods.

Finally, if you know elderly or sick people who live alone, it is advisable to visit them at least once a day. This is to ensure that they follow these tips. If they are under medical treatment, it is important to consult the doctor to verify if it is necessary to adjust the medication during the heat wave.

These recommendations are essential to minimize the risks associated with extreme heat. Also to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens, especially those in vulnerable situations.
