Barcelona continues its commitment to the creation and improvement of public spaces with the recent reopening of the Clara Campoamor Gardens in the district of Les Corts. After a comprehensive reform that responds to the current needs of the city and its inhabitants, Mayor Jaume Collboni has stressed that these gardens represent “a green area won for the city and the district, inclusive and designed for everyone”.
A tribute to Clara Campoamor and her legacy
The figure of Clara Campoamor, defender of women’s rights in Spain, was central to the opening ceremony. Collboni recalled the famous speech that Campoamor gave on October 1, 1931 before the Cortes, defending women’s suffrage and political equality for women. “We want to pay tribute to Clara Campoamor and to the struggle of the women who achieved political equality in this country,” stressed the mayor.
Public-private partnership for reform
The garden renovation project has been made possible thanks to a public-private partnership between the District of Les Corts, Merlin Properties and Inmobiliaria Colonial, which have contributed 820,000 euros to finance the works. In turn, the Barcelona City Council has invested 810,000 euros, through the Area of Economy, the District of Les Corts and the Institute of Parks and Gardens. In total, the budget for this refurbishment amounts to 1.6 million euros. This public-private cooperation formula is not new in the district of Les Corts. It had already been successfully implemented in the renovation of the Sant Joan de Déu Gardens, demonstrating that this type of partnership can have a significant impact on the improvement of the city’s public spaces.
Improvements to adapt to changing times
Originally urbanized around 1990, the Clara Campoamor Gardens needed a general renovation to adapt to the new uses and requirements of the public space. Among the improvements made, the renovation of the street furniture and the creation of a path that invites visitors to stroll among the vegetation stand out.
Barcelona lacks recreational areas for children with disabilities
The emblematic sculpture Citerea, which remains the centerpiece of the gardens, has been respected, but is now surrounded by shrubs and grasses that improve the aesthetics of the environment. In addition, accessibility has been a priority in this renovation, with the elimination of architectural barriers and the improvement of side accesses, ensuring that people of all ages and physical conditions can fully enjoy the space.
A space for enjoyment and conviviality
With the aim of allowing neighbors and workers in the area to enjoy the space, new rest areas with abundant vegetation have been created. These places not only invite relaxation, but also encourage outdoor activities, making the gardens more welcoming and adaptable to the current climatic conditions. In the nearby office area, flowerbeds and areas with tables and benches have been installed, offering an ideal place for a break or a moment of disconnection in the middle of the working day.
Renovation of the children’s area
One of the key points of the refurbishment was the renovation of the children’s area, which now has new inclusive playground equipment. These include a ramp-accessible slide, as well as an accessible playground and a grassy esplanade, providing a safe and fun space for the little ones.

These changes not only improve the quality of the space, but also promote inclusion and family enjoyment, making the Clara Campoamor Gardens a meeting place for all generations.
A green space for a more sustainable Barcelona
The reopening of the Clara Campoamor Gardens is an example of how the city of Barcelona continues its commitment to the creation of sustainable public spaces, designed to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. The combination of vegetation, accessibility and recreational areas make this an ideal space for coexistence and outdoor enjoyment, making it a new green lung in the heart of Les Corts.
