About Montserrat and its monastery
The sanctuary of the Benedictine Monks in Montserrat is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular mountains in Catalonia. The views are really beautiful and the aroma of history and tradition is felt in the atmosphere. Located northwest of Barcelona and if you go by train, the trip takes about an hour.
You can learn about the holy grotto where apparitions of the Virgin Mary have been reported, take great hikes in the mountains while admiring the scenery or listen to recitals by the children of the world-famous Montserrat Choir.
The hikes through the mountains will allow you to appreciate some of the most unusual rock formations in Catalonia.
You can also listen to performances of Gregorian chants and religious music by the Basilica’s children’s choir. The presentations are free and you can enter to listen to them at 1:00 p.m. every day except Christmas, July and other holidays during the year.
The Monastery’s children’s choir has recorded more than 100 choir and religious music albums.
History of Montserrat
It all began in 880 when small shepherds saw a bright light descending from the sky in the mountains of Montserrat and heard angels singing. The music filled their hearts with great joy and happiness.
The children then ran home to tell their parents about the experience and although they did not immediately believe them, they went to the site to see if they could check it out. During the month following the first apparition, the parents also experienced the same heavenly experiences and wonderingly concluded that the visions were a sign from God.
