The Cusiné company, based in Vilafranca del Penedès, province of Barcelona, has achieved remarkable success in the high quality salt industry, expanding its business internationally and diversifying its product portfolio.
What began more than fifty years ago as a small business selling sugars and flours to local bakeries and pastry shops has evolved into a company with an annual turnover of more than 40 million euros. They are also exporters to European and African countries.
The entry of the third generation of the Cusiné family, headed by Jaume Cusiné, was an important turning point for the growth and expansion of the business.
It was at that time that they decided to introduce salt into their product portfolio, recognizing its wide use in the food industry, especially in bakery and confectionery.
With this strategic decision, Cusiné abandoned small stores and focused on serving the needs of the large-scale food industry.
Cusiné: high quality salt beyond the food industry
However, Cusiné did not limit itself to the food industry, but explored other opportunities in underdeveloped sectors related to salt.
Taking advantage of their experience in the supply of raw materials for the bakery industry, they entered the leather and textile industries in the Igualada area.
This diversified approach allowed them to expand and move to a larger space in Olèrdola, where they now have a 7,500 square meter warehouse and handle more than 90,000 tons of raw materials per year.
One of the most significant milestones in Cusiné’s trajectory was its incursion into the water treatment and swimming pool sector.
Working with different types of salt, such as sea salt and vaccum salt used in water treatment, they were able to cover a wide range of industries, from bakery and meat to swimming pools and water softeners.
Salt became the mainstay of its business, marketing up to 70,000 tons per year.
Growth during the pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cusiné experienced significant growth due to the high demand for bakery and pastry related products.
They became key suppliers at a time when flours, yeasts and doughs were in short supply in supermarkets.
Despite global supply challenges, they were able to sustain themselves thanks to their ample security reserves.
Now, the third generation of the Cusiné family aims to make a qualitative leap and has developed its own brand for salt used in swimming pools and water softeners.
In addition to wholesale, they also sell their products to El Corte Inglés, Bricodeport and other chains.
