If you are a lover of the works of the master Gaudí, you can not miss a tour of the Casa Vicens. In fact, the house was his first work built between 1883 and 1885, initially as a summer residence for the Vicens family. This magnificent architectural work was the beginning of all his later works.
Casa Vicens was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. It is considered one of the pioneering buildings of Modernism not only in Catalonia but in all of Europe.
Throughout history, the Vicens house and its estate have undergone several transformations. The most outstanding were the original construction between 1883 -1885 by Antoni Gaudí; then its extension and the garden that surrounds it in 1925 by Joan Baptista Serra de Martínez.
By that time the property took on a more cultural task and was rehabilitated as a museum open to the public, respecting Gaudi’s original structure.
What you will learn on the Vicens house tour
The building has all the facilities and resources to facilitate the entrance of visitors. In fact, it is adapted so that people with reduced mobility can also do it.
On the ground floor of the house is the reception area to welcome you. On the first and second floors are located the permanent exhibition halls whose center of attention is the building itself. Also on these floors there are spaces for temporary exhibitions and other cultural activities that are part of the museum.
The access to the house and the internal circulation could be solved with the construction of a modern staircase, right where the old one was and integrates the two floors. It also has an elevator that connects the different floors of the building to the upper deck.
In the subway floor of the building is the “Capell”, a shop/bookstore specializing in notebooks, books, architectural and design products. There you can find everything related to architecture in Barcelona. At the end of the garden you will find a delicious gastronomic space, the “Café Hoffman”.
