ElBulli 1846, Ferran Adrià’s famous restaurant, closed its doors in 2011 after being recognised as one of the best restaurants in the world.
Now, after more than a decade, it will reopen as a museum in June 2023, to maintain and vindicate its legacy in gastronomy.
The new museum, called ElBulli1846, is a unique experience in the world. It features 69 artistic, conceptual and audiovisual installations and a total immersion in the restaurant’s legacy.
The creative team behind the museum believes it will appeal not only to gourmets, but also to the public driven by knowledge and innovation.
The museum will be located on the beach of Cala Montjoi in Roses, where the original restaurant is located.
ElBulli1846 will increase the original restaurant’s surface area by 30%, reaching 4,000 square metres. The refurbishment and adaptation of the space will require an investment of 11 million euros.
ElBulli 1846: from restaurant to museum
The museum’s itinerary will focus on gastronomic innovation and cooking methodology. Visitors will start at the outside of the premises, where they will find various installations that take the public into the origins of the cuisine.
Among other things, there are drawings made by Ferran Adrià with paint and chopsticks on old bills from the restaurant that ask about the origin of cooking, divided into two periods: the Palaeolithic and the Neolithic.
The museum tour will continue inside, where visitors can see the restaurant’s kitchen and continue with an audio guide in Catalan, Spanish, English and French.
The tour will last about two and a half hours and ticket prices have been set at 27 euros.
There will also be reduced admission for pensioners, students, young people, people with disabilities and the citizens of Roses.
Museum and research centre
ElBulli1846 will be open for three months, from 15 June to 16 September 2023, and it is expected that some 200 people will be able to visit the museum at the same time.
For the rest of the year, the space will continue to function as a research centre to promote innovation and generate quality content for education and self-learning in catering.
