With an investment of 9.4 million euros, the Barcelona City Council will install six escalators and an inclined elevator in different parts of the city to make these areas more accessible.
These resources come from the European Next Generation funds, within the framework of the 2021 call of the Government’s Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda.
The objective with these new works is to improve the mobility of the citizens and above all, the easy access to specific points of the mountain neighborhoods and their connection with the rest of the city.
Escalators and an inclined elevator for mobility
Janet Sanz, Deputy Mayor for Infrastructure and Mobility, states that “escalators and elevators are elements that guarantee the right to mobility and connectivity for citizens, especially those living in districts with steep slopes.”
In total, the escalators of:
- La Baixada de la Glòria (new escalator).
- Those on Arenys Street, escalator.
- The ones in rue de les Agude, escalator.
- Eleven stairways will be replaced in Rasos de Peguera-Zona Deportiva, Rasos de Peguera- Mercado and Alguer. Other stairways will also be made reversible.
- Two elevators in Telègraf street will be renovated.
The city currently has 93 escalators, 5 inclined elevators and 46 vertical elevators.
These means of transportation allow about 21 million people to pass through each year.
Barcelona is one of the “most accessible cities in the world”, but its orography complicates accessibility in some areas.
