The colossal labyrinthine space, the Espai Cobreró, will take on new life and become a cultural facility open to the public. To this end, the City Council of Esplugues de Llobregat closed the purchase of this building for 2.9 million euros.
This unique space has 1,995 square meters built on a plot of 2,055 meters.
So far and to maintain it, the widow of the sculptor of this work (Xavier Corberó who died in 2017), has been renting the house for filming, events and advertising campaigns.
What is inside Espai Cobreró?
It is built on the first floor perpendicular to Església street in Esplugues de Llobregat. It has several courtyards surrounding it, as well as water reservoirs and a subway auditorium that seats 300 people.
This auditorium is a 700 square meter space and is of great architectural interest because of its vaulted ceiling and because despite being very large, it has no supporting columns.
The building is forged of reinforced concrete and semicircular arches. It also includes some thirty sculptures that will become municipal property.
The Espai Cobreró has hosted fashion shows of the 080 catwalk and achieved recognition when Woody Allen chose it as the painter’s studio for the film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, a character played by Javier Bardem.
The sculptor Xavier Corberó designed it in 1968 with the intention of making it a habitable sculpture, in the midst of labyrinthine constructions and a forest with bronze and stone characters.
He wanted to make it a place to live and work and a refuge for other artists.
