Festivities of La Mercè will take place between September 20 and 24.

Between September 20th and 24th, locals and visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the traditional festivities of La Mercè. This is one of the most emblematic celebrations in Barcelona. This year’s edition features a program full of cultural, musical and traditional activities that promise to fill the city with life and color. Celebrated in honor of the Virgen de la Merced, the patron saint of Barcelona, these festivities are an occasion when the city is transformed, offering a vast array of free events for locals and tourists alike.

La MercèTraditional festivities of La Mercè

The feast of La Mercè pays homage to the patron saint of Barcelona, who is associated with several miracles linked to the city. It is said that on September 24, 1218, Our Lady of Mercy appeared simultaneously to King James I, St. Peter Nolasco and St. Raymond of Peñafor. At that time, she entrusted them with the creation of a religious order dedicated to rescuing Christians held captive in Muslim lands.

Centuries later, in 1687, Barcelona was devastated by a plague of locusts and the city asked for the protection of the Virgin of Mercy. After the disappearance of the plague, the people of Barcelona proclaimed the Virgin as patroness of the diocese. However, it was not until 1868, under the papacy of Pius IX, that her proclamation as patron saint of Barcelona became official.

Since then, the festival has evolved to become one of the most important in the city, with a focus on Catalan culture and traditions.

Activity highlights

On Friday, September 20, the outstanding illustrator Carme Solé Vendrell will be in charge of offering the traditional proclamation that will kick off the festivities of La Mercè. This event will take place in the Salón de Cent of the City Hall, and will be accompanied by the solemn inaugural procession at 19:00 hours.

After the proclamation, the Plaza de Sant Jaume will be the stage for the “Toc d’Inici”, an essential event in which Barcelona’s festive figures, such as the giants and the dragon, will perform their traditional dances to the beat of a melody that marks the official start of the celebrations. This activity will take place from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm.

During the entire period of La Mercè, from September 20 to 24, attendees will be able to enjoy the exhibition of the Séquito Popular. Iconic figures such as the eagle, the giants and the dragon will be on display at the Pati Manning and the Centro Cultural del Born, where they can be visited from 10:00 to 20:00 hours.

Another highlight of the Mercè Arts de Carrer (MAC) program is the circus show at Montjuïc Castle. Between September 20 and 24, various theater, dance and, of course, circus performances will be presented in this emblematic space of the city.

Sustainability at parties

In 2024, La Mercè will focus more than ever on sustainability. The city of Barcelona is implementing measures to reduce the environmental impact of the festivities. It is expected that there will be fewer pyrotechnics at some events to reduce noise and air pollution, and activities will be promoted that highlight the importance of caring for the environment.

In addition, the program will include increased representation of inclusive culture and diversity. There will be events and activities designed to be accessible to people with disabilities, and special attention will be given to the representation of different cultures within the programming.

The Mercè Festival is not only a time of celebration, but also an important economic injection for the city. Thousands of tourists flock to Barcelona during this week, which boosts the tourism sector and the local economy. Hotels, restaurants and stores prepare to welcome visitors, and the city as a whole benefits from the increased activity.

La Mercè 2024 promises to be a special edition, combining tradition, modernity and a renewed focus on sustainability and inclusion. For Barcelonans, these festivities are a reminder of their pride in their culture and community, while for visitors, they are a window into the city’s rich history and vibrant life. There is no doubt that this edition will leave an indelible mark on all those who participate in its many events and celebrations.
