Sant Jordi’s day is one of the most important in Catalan culture, where the arrival of spring, love and literature is celebrated.
In addition to the traditional sale of books and roses in the streets, on this day it is possible to visit the most emblematic places of the city for free.
The Holy Family
One of the most iconic places in Barcelona is the Sagrada Familia, a masterpiece of the modernist architect Antoni Gaudí.
In this Sant Jordi, the church opens its doors free of charge to all those whose name is Jordi, Jordina, Jorge or Jorgina and a companion, without the need to make a previous reservation. Visitors can explore the majestic church from 10:30 am to 7 pm.
The Palau Güell
Another of the most impressive places in Barcelona is the Palau Güell, also a work of Gaudí. This modernist palace located on Nou de la Rambla street also opens its doors for free during Sant Jordi’s Day, but with the condition that visitors reserve their tickets in advance. Palau Güell will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site
For those interested in modernist architecture, the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau is another interesting option. This place was designed by the Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and is a masterpiece of modernism. During Sant Jordi’s Day, the site will offer guided tours and activities to learn about the history of the building and its architect.
The Mies van der Rohe Pavilion
In addition, for those who want to learn about the work of Ludwig Miles van der Rohe, the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion is an excellent option. This building was built in 1929 to represent Germany at the Barcelona International Exposition and today it is the headquarters of a foundation that promotes the work of the German architect. During Sant Jordi’s Day, the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will have a reading area next to a book stand.

Admission to the venue will be free until full capacity is reached, so a large number of people are expected to enjoy the live music.
The Palau de la Generalitat
The medieval building, which is the seat of the Catalan government, will be one of the places that can be visited free of charge. This historic building is an important tourist attraction and a symbol of the city.
The Ateneu Barcelonés
Located in the Gothic Quarter, it will also open its doors to celebrate Sant Jordi with activities such as readings aloud of current Catalan works and a theatrical performance of the play La casa en obres.
