The culinary jewel of the Catalan garden, the tomato, will be the protagonist of the first Viladecans Tomato Festival, to be held on September 30, 2023.
Organized by the City Council of Viladecans and Ametller Origen, it promises an immersive experience in the world of tomatoes, from their origin to their culinary uses and nutritional benefits.
If you are a lover of gastronomy and local products, this festival is a “must” in your agenda.
The tomato is a jewel of the Catalan vegetable garden, with a rich history that dates back to the 18th century, when the farmers of the Maresme region and the Llobregat delta began to cultivate it.
With more than one hundred varieties and a thousand ways to enjoy it, tomatoes are an essential element in Mediterranean cuisine and a star product in the homes of the region.
1st Viladecans Tomato Festival: celebrating the gastronomic treasure of Catalonia
Viladecans, one of the municipalities of the Llobregat Agricultural Park, has stood out for its commitment to tomato cultivation. For this reason, the City Council of Viladecans will hold a day dedicated to celebrate this product appreciated for its aroma, flavor, texture and nutritional value.
The Viladecans Tomato Festival will be held in the Plaza de la Mediterrània and the Cúbic building. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors will be able to immerse themselves in a world of workshops and showcookings designed to teach all about tomatoes.
In addition, tomatoes will also be available for purchase at a Farmers’ Market, which will include a display of unique tomato varieties.
Outstanding chefs and “kitchen of use”.
The event will feature the participation of renowned chefs, such as Ada Parellada and Vicent Guimerà, who will share their culinary experience with attendees. The “kitchen of use” will be one of the focal points of the festival.
In addition, the documentary “Tomatoes Listen to Wagner”, a fascinating story that combines music and agriculture, will be screened.
The Viladecans Tomato Festival is not only for adult food lovers. The youngest members of the household will also enjoy activities designed especially for them, such as coloring tomato varieties, making crafts with tomatoes and learning about different types of tomatoes.
The fight against food waste will play a central role in this festival. Workshops given by “Es im-perfect,” the brand of canned vegetables created by the Espigoladors Foundation, will teach how to transform tomatoes into jam.
A scientific approach
The Tomato Festival will also offer scientific workshops in collaboration with the Viladecans Foundation and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Visitors will be able to learn how to extract DNA from a tomato and know its pH level.
