Every year, on September 11, Catalonia dresses up to celebrate the Diada. On this day, the city is filled with demonstrations, institutional acts and cultural events to celebrate the Catalan identity and advocate for its autonomy. This year, the Diada de Catalunya 2023 promises to be an event full of meaning.
In a press release, the consistory informed that multiple institutional events and four rallies are expected to be held in the city.
Diada de Catalunya 2023, a day of celebration
To ensure that the celebrations run safely and smoothly, the City Council has urged citizens and visitors to use public transportation, especially the Metro.
The Barcelona Metro has increased its train offer by 20% on lines L1 and L3 compared to a normal public holiday, specifically between 13:00 and 21:00 hours.
This means that there will be up to 18 additional trains to help passengers move efficiently during the Diada.
However, it is recommended to avoid España station, where both lines stop, and use alternatives such as Hostafrancs (L1), Rocafort (L1), Tarragona (L3) and Poble Sec (L3) from 15:30 hours.
In addition to the Metro, Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) has also reinforced service on the Barcelona-Vallès and Llobregat-Anoia lines to ensure greater availability of public transport during the Diada.
More than 500 circulations will be added to the usual holiday service, making it easier for citizens and visitors to get around.
Traffic in the city during this day
The celebration of the Diada will also have an impact on traffic in Barcelona. During the morning of September 11, some bus lines that run along the Ronda de Sant Pere, such as the D50, H16, 19 and the red route of the Barcelona Bus Turístico, will modify their route due to the floral offerings at the monument of Rafael Casanova.
In the afternoon, significant disruptions are expected on 26 TMB bus lines between 15:30 and 21:00 hours. These alterations could result in detours and route limitations on regular lines such as D20, D40, H10, H12, H16, V3, V5, V7, V9, V11, V13, 13, 27, 46, 54, among others, and the Tourist Bus route.
Barcelona City Council has also announced parking restrictions in the city during the Diada. From 2:00 p.m. on Saturday until 11:00 p.m. on Monday, parking will be prohibited on Avenida Reina Maria Cristina, between Plaza España and Avenida Rius y Taulet.
Five areas for bus stops and waiting parking, as well as passenger boarding and alighting, will be set up at strategic locations in the city, such as Avinguda de Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, Paralel, Aragó and Florida Blanca streets, and the existing bus zone on Montjuïc mountain.
