The Department of Health of the Generalitat launched an incentive program of between 5,000 and 9,000 euros per year for new residents in family medicine or mental health nursing.
The incentive is for new residents who choose a place in Catalonia. All due to the lack of professionals in these areas that are highly appreciated by the increase of mental problems derived from the Covid pandemic.
Catalonia requires family medicine residents
The measure was taken by the Department of Health, due to the lack of physicians in these specialties. Both family medicine and mental health are not the first choice of residents when choosing a position.
Therefore, Catalonia seeks to encourage professionals to choose these areas, together with attracting and retaining talent.
With this incentive, it is expected that approximately 370 family medicine residents and 52 mental health nursing residents will be incorporated.
Residents joining one of the two specialties as of next May will receive between 5,000 and 9,000 euros per year.
The family medicine residency is four years long and the mental health nursing residency is two years long, depending on the location.
In the case of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, first crown, it is 5,000 euros per year. For the second, i.e., the rest of the Barcelona demarcation, it will be 7,000 euros per year. For the other areas of Catalonia, 9,000 euros.
