Railway company Iryo strengthens its presence in the Spanish market with the launch of a new route connecting Barcelona with Seville as of December 10, 2023.
This initiative is part of Iryo’s expansion in Spain and will offer four daily frequencies, two outbound and two return trips, every day of the week.
In total, more than 673,000 seats per year will be offered on this route, providing travelers with an additional option to travel the distance between these two important Spanish cities.
Travel time on the Iryo route will be five hours and fifty minutes. The train will make strategic stops in Zaragoza, Madrid, Cordoba and Seville, thus connecting various regions of Spain.
In addition, a stop in Tarragona will be included during the summer season. This new route will provide a faster and more convenient connection between Catalonia and Andalusia.
Train departure times have been designed to accommodate a variety of travel preferences. From Barcelona, trains will depart at 09:50 and 13:45, arriving in Seville at 15:36 and 19:39, respectively.
On the other hand, from Seville, trains will depart at 06:54 and 16:20, arriving at Sants station in Barcelona at 12:45 and 22:10, respectively. These schedules offer options for both day and night travelers.
Iryo in Spain to connect Barcelona with Seville
Iryo, a private company in which Trenitalia, Air Nostrum and Globalvia participate, began operations in Spain in November last year. Initially, Iryo focused on the route between Barcelona and Madrid, a route historically operated by Renfe, the Spanish national railway company.
In addition, it competes on this route with the French low-cost carrier Ouigo. While Ouigo focuses on offering competitive prices, Iryo is distinguished by its onboard services and a completely new fleet of trains.
Iryo’s expansion into Barcelona and Seville reinforces competition in the Spanish rail market. Recently, Renfe, the Spanish railway company, has intensified its services, particularly on the route between Barcelona and Malaga.
This expansion included stops in Tarragona and Lleida, increasing the offer from two to four trains daily and adding 1,000 daily seats on this route.
Renfe’s offer, which included promotional fares from 30 euros, applied to journeys made from the end of October and throughout 2024. Competition among railway companies in Spain translates into a greater variety of options for travelers and more competitive fares.
Tickets for the new route
Tickets for Iryo’s new Barcelona-Seville route have been available on its website since October 31. They can also be purchased at authorized points of sale starting in November.
