Juanes, originally Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez and born August 9, 1972, is a Colombian singer, songwriter, musician, designer and activist. From a very young age and with the encouragement of his father and five siblings, Juanes has been exposed to and influenced by different musical genres, from rock and roll, to traditional Colombian music, to Latin Pop and Rock en Español.
This multifaceted musician has won 26 Latin Grammy Awards, released 14 studio albums and sold more than 15 million records worldwide.
Early life and education
Juanes was born in Medellín, Colombia, on August 9, 1972, son of Javier Aristizábal and Alicia Vásquez. While growing up in Colombia, he was exposed to a wide variety of musical genres, from Rock and Pop, to traditional Colombian and other Latin American music.
In 1988, at the age of 16, he co-founded the rock band Ekhymosis, which would eventually produce five albums over the course of their time together. The group began working on their sixth album in 1998, when Juanes decided to pursue a solo career.
Solo career and awards
Juanes’ debut solo album, Fíjate bien, was released in September 2000 and won three Latin Grammy Awards. It was also certified Multiplatinum in Mexico, Colombia and Argentina, as well as Platinum in Venezuela, Chile and the United States. Following his success, Juanes released three more studio albums before his 2011 album, Juanes MTV Unplugged, featuring Mick Jagger, appeared on the best-selling albums chart in the United States.
