La Casa Tosquella in Barcelona is reborn as a center for the elderly.

After years of neglect, the historic Casa Tosquella, a modernist jewel built in 1889 and located in Barcelona’s Putxet neighborhood, is about to undergo a significant transformation.

The Barcelona City Council acquired this property during the previous term of office, with the vision of converting it into a center for the elderly.

The need for an extensive rehabilitation led the consistory to call a competition, resulting in the choice of Clara Solà-Morales Studio and Metrònom Arquitectura to carry out this monumental task.

A new life for Casa Tosquella in Barcelona

The building, which is listed as a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN), has been patiently awaiting its rebirth. With three of its four facades protected, the rehabilitation project will focus on restoring them to preserve their original modernist design.

The fourth façade, unprotected, will become the canvas for the expansion of the building and the incorporation of elements necessary for a senior center, such as elevators and accessible bathrooms.

The design of this new façade, with undulating forms, seeks to offer a contemporary reinterpretation of the original architectural language of the house, respecting its essence but giving it a modern touch.

This element will also serve as the new main entrance from the Ronda del General Mitre, guaranteeing accessibility without stairs.

Planned changes and expansion of outdoor space

The fourth facade will not only be a functional addition but also an aesthetic one, integrating with the existing modernist design. In addition, it will allow the creation of new spaces, such as elevators and accessible restrooms, which are not feasible in the historic interior.

The historic interiors of the estate will also undergo careful restoration, preserving the essence and authenticity of these spaces. As for the exteriors, the project includes the restoration of the original garden, carried out by professionals specialized in heritage gardens.

The winning proposal also contemplates the expansion of this garden through an adjacent plot, transforming it into a new park for the enjoyment of the Putxet neighborhood community.

Towards a future of history and community care

The renovation of Casa Tosquella, which is currently at the preliminary design stage, marks the return of one of Barcelona’s historic buildings after more than a decade of neglect.

Although there is still no precise timetable for the start and completion of the work, this initiative promises to be more than just an architectural renovation.

It is emerging as a vital and caring space for the elderly community in the neighborhood.

Casa Tosquella is a historic building in modernist style but with several Arab elements. It was abandoned in 2012 and the Barcelona City Council bought it in 2021 to convert it into a center for the elderly.
