Barcelona celebrates a new achievement in the field of design and sustainable mobility. La Cuca de Llum, the funicular that transports visitors to the top of Tibidabo, has been awarded the prestigious International Design Awards in the category of Sustainability, sustainable infrastructure and green architecture design.
In 2021, La Cuca de Llum took on the challenge of replacing the historic Tibidabo Amusement Park funicular, which had been in operation since 1901.
The main objective was clear: to reduce emissions and encourage the use of public transport to access the top of the mountain. Designed by the Barcelona studio MIAS Arquitectes, La Cuca de Llum became an outstanding example of sustainable mobility and visionary design.
The International Design Awards granted to La Cuca de Llum is not the first recognition it has received. Since its inauguration, this modern funicular has garnered accolades and renowned awards, including Architizer A+, Dan Paris Design and LOOP Design.
Its success lies in the combination of unique design, innovative technology and an unwavering commitment to sustainability.
La Cuca de Llum: more than a funicular railway
La Cuca de Llum offers users a unique experience from the moment they step on board. Designed by architect Josep Miàs, this funicular stands out as “an example of mobile architecture with design elements in all its aspects”.
Glass roofs and transparent benches allow a panoramic view throughout the journey, making the trip as impressive as the destination.
This funicular has become an essential pillar for transportation to the top of Tibidabo, registering more than 806,000 users by 2023.
This impressive number represents a 19.5% growth compared to the previous year, consolidating its position as the main collective transport option to access the Tibidabo Panoramic Area.
The commitment to sustainable mobility and the reduction of polluting emissions has been fundamental to the acceptance and success of La Cuca de Llum. The implementation of sustainable technologies and materials has contributed to its recognition in the Sustainability category of the International Design Awards.
Very promising future
La Cuca de Llum has demonstrated that design innovation and sustainable mobility can go hand in hand. With its most recent recognition at the International Design Awards, it is hoped that this funicular will continue to be a beacon of inspiration for future projects that seek to combine efficiency, aesthetics and environmental responsibility.
February 3, 2024 will mark the reopening of the Tibidabo Panoramic Area, where La Cuca de Llum will continue to play a crucial role in the visitor experience. Barcelona, with its vision for a more sustainable future, celebrates this achievement.
