La Gran Pantalla: film festival for senior citizens

Barcelona is getting ready to host the fifth edition of La Gran Pantalla, the International Film Festival for the Elderly.

This event has become an important intergenerational film meeting point, whose objective is to dismantle prejudices and stereotypes about the elderly through film.

This year’s program will feature some thirty proposals, including the screening of the film “20,000 species of bees”, winner of the award for best leading performance at the Berlinale.

What is The Big Screen?

The Big Screen 2023 seeks to be a space for dialogue, reflection and social transformation around the imaginaries that society has about the elderly.

It is a scenario to discuss the issues that affect this population group, showing its plurality and combating the most common stereotypes.

The festival aims to highlight the beauty of old age and to value what unites and differentiates people in different moments of life.

It thus consolidates its position as the main Film Festival dedicated to the elderly, inviting us to reflect on active aging.

The fifth edition of the festival will be held from July 4 to 9, 2023 at the Cinemes Girona in Barcelona.

During these days, nine feature films and eighteen short films will be screened, in addition to dialogues, round tables and master classes with production teams and related topics.

As a prelude to the festival, the Filmoteca de Catalunya will screen the classic musical “Singin’ in the Rain” (1952).

In addition, on July 2, a concert will be held in the Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia with Son de la Rambla, as part of the celebration of this fifth edition.

Programming

The Big Screen offers diverse programming that addresses issues such as love, care, loneliness, the digital divide, the climate emergency and intergenerational relationships.

All festival activities are free of charge, thus encouraging the participation of all those interested in enjoying cinema and reflecting on aging and the diversity of experiences.

In this edition, the festival will pay tribute to Teresa Gimpera, renowned actress and model, member of the Gauche Divine.

Gimpera has an extensive career in the world of cinema, with more than one hundred titles to his credit.

Her life and work are an example to dismantle prejudices and stereotypes about the elderly. For this reason, he will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in this edition.

The International Film Festival of the Elderly of Barcelona is a project carried out by the entity elParlante in collaboration with the Elderly and People with Disabilities of the Barcelona City Council, the Department of Children and Youth.
