Nearly 8,500 applicants applied for 1,529 positions in the Barcelona City Council.

Last December 16, around 8,500 applicants took the exams of a new public offer promoted by the Barcelona City Council.

The tests were held at the Espai Fira in Hospitalet de Llobregat and at the Faculty of Law of the University of Barcelona (UB), marking the first phase of a three-phase process that includes the stabilization of the workforce, a public offer of employment and internal promotion for municipal staff.

8,500 applicants applied for a diversity of job opportunities

The practical examinations were divided into three main categories:

  • Stabilization by competitive examination: 42 different categories.
  • Public Employment Offer: 34 categories.
  • Internal Promotion: 5 categories.

In total, 1,529 positions are offered in 81 different selective processes. This event marked the beginning of an ongoing process that will extend until 2024, including specific and general tests for the affected categories.

In total, a team of 585 people from the municipal staff were in charge of the support and surveillance tasks during the tests.

Several adaptations were also implemented to ensure equal opportunities, such as the installation of the Jaws screen reader program for the blind, expanded text for those who need it, ergonomic chairs and a breastfeeding area.

Growth and renewal of the workforce

Since 2019, the Barcelona City Council has led the way in job creation in the public sector through annual calls for applications. These efforts have resulted in a significant increase and renewal of the municipal workforce, which has grown from 11,094 to more than 12,062 workers.

This increase has not only been quantitative, but has also contributed to a reduction in the average age of municipal personnel, from 49.69 to 46.4 years.

These recruitment and turnover efforts have been carried out even during challenging times, such as the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During this period, the workforce has increased by almost 1,000 people, demonstrating a continued commitment to providing essential services despite difficult circumstances.

Past achievements and significant figures

Since 2019, the public offer called by the Barcelona City Council has totaled 5,403 vacancies in 62 different professional categories. These calls attracted a total of 66,108 applicants, filling 3,035 positions.

Within internal promotion, 2,048 people competed for 1,054 positions, of which 454 have already been filled. In addition, 15,842 people applied for the creation of municipal labor exchanges, of which 1,010 positions have already been activated.

The new call is part of the ongoing commitment by the City of Barcelona to strengthen and diversify its workforce, providing significant job opportunities of an inclusive nature, integrating people with disabilities to the call.

The applicants are waiting to pass the exams and continue with the selection process to occupy one of the positions offered.
