Norwegian Airlines has excitedly announced the reopening of its Barcelona base after being forced to close in 2020 due to financial difficulties.
This news brings great news both for the company and for travelers who yearn to explore new destinations.
As of May 1, 2023, Norwegian will operate two Boeing 737 aircraft at El Prat Airport, creating 65 direct jobs for pilots and cabin crew.
These new jobs are in addition to the 130 existing jobs in the city, where Norwegian also has one of its three administrative sites.
This reopening represents a significant economic boost and a show of confidence in the potential of the Barcelona market.
Norwegian airline Norwegian connecting Barcelona with Nordic countries
The company plans to connect the Catalan capital with eight destinations in four Nordic countries.
Travelers will be able to fly from Barcelona to Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger in Norway; Copenhagen and Aalborg in Denmark; Stockholm and Gothenburg in Sweden; and Helsinki in Finland.
These routes will be available from May 1 through October 31, 2023 and are expected to be repeated in the summer seasons in future years.
It is important to note that until 2020, Norwegian operated a long-haul base at El Prat Airport, with flights connecting Barcelona to destinations in the United States.
However, due to financial difficulties, the company had to close this base and carry out a restructuring process that affected almost 1,000 workers throughout the country.
However, Norwegian is determined to resume its presence in Barcelona and reaffirm its commitment to the Spanish market.
This summer, the airline will operate a total of 49 routes in Spain, including eight from Barcelona.
These routes will connect nine airports in the country, with Barcelona, Alicante and Malaga being the operational bases where aircraft and crews will stay overnight.
Norwegian, a good option to fly
The reopening of the Barcelona base represents an important milestone for Norwegian and for travelers seeking additional flight options.
In addition, this announcement represents an economic boost for the region, as direct jobs will be generated and tourism will be promoted.
Norwegian intends to have its base in Barcelona operational during the summer seasons starting this year, demonstrating its long-term commitment to the city.
With twenty years of operations in Spain, Norwegian has transported close to 50 million passengers in the country.
During this time, the airline has expanded its route network and increased its flight offerings year after year.
From its first international flights to today’s 116 destinations, Norwegian has proven to be a popular and reliable choice for Spanish travelers.
