The Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona is preparing for an exciting new season full of innovative and impressive proposals in the field of opera and ballet.
Under the artistic direction of Víctor García de Gomar, the Liceu has evolved into a space with a broader artistic ambition, connecting with other artistic disciplines such as photography, plastic arts and poetry.
This season, the Liceu presents a program that seeks the impurity of the mix to highlight the virtues of the works and the feelings, offering the public a complete sensory and intellectual experience.
Exciting opera and ballet season
In the field of opera, the Liceu will feature 14 new productions, including three outstanding premieres.
Among them is the intimate and tragic opera “Eugene Onegin” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, with a production by Christoph Loy.
Two contemporary operas will also be premiered: “Antony & Cleopatra” by the American minimalist composer John Adams and “Orgia” by Héctor Parra from Barcelona, inspired by the work of Pier Paolo Pasolini and with stage direction by Calixto Bieito.
In addition, renowned works such as Bizet’s “Carmen”, Puccini’s “Turandot”, Verdi’s “Un ballo in maschera”, among others, will be presented.
The opera season will feature the participation of outstanding voices and conductors.
Among them are German tenor Jonas Kaufmann, Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva, sopranos Elena Pankratova and Nadine Sierra, tenor Michael Fabiano, among others.
There will also be lyrical recitals and galas with renowned artists such as Javier Camarena, Carlos Álvarez, Ermonela Jaho, Lisette Oropesa and soprano Sondra Radvanovsky.
In addition to opera productions, ballet will also have a prominent place in the season.
Four proposals combining classical and modern ballet will be presented, such as a new version of Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” by the Rome Opera Ballet, and a production based on Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” by choreographer Sasha Waltz.
Modern works such as “Faun/Noetic” by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with the Dortmund Ballet will also be presented.
The Gran Teatre del Liceu broadens its horizon
The Liceu de les Arts, a parallel program of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, will expand its scope this season.
It will include lectures, poetry recitals, painting and photography exhibitions.
The artists in residence will be photographer Joan Fontcuberta, stage director Robert Wilson, composer John Adams and poet Susanna Rafart.
In addition, there will be an interactive exhibition by the artists Lolo&Susaku.
In this way, the Liceu consolidates its position as a complete cultural center, offering a wide range of artistic and cultural experiences for the public.
