Passeig de Gràcia metro corridor transformed into a unique interactive experience

ARS GRACIA project brings art and technology to the subway

In Barcelona’s bustling subway, the ARS GRACIA project is about to revolutionize the way commuters experience their daily routine in the metro. Developed by the Catalan platform ARTIFÍCIA, this installation not only promises a sound and visual experience, but also turns a stretch of the subway corridor into an interactive spectacle that connects with passengers on a whole new level. Imagine walking down the corridor and feeling how each movement translates into unique musical notes and visual patterns.

interactive sound installation

The initiative is part of a challenge launched by the Barcelona City Council and Transporte Metropolitano de Barcelona (TMB), aimed at commemorating the centenary of the city’s metro. This significant event is marked not only by celebration, but also by a drive towards innovation and creativity.

Real-time musical and visual interaction

ARS GRACIA is not just any installation. Bridging the digital and analog worlds, it employs artificial intelligence to generate music and images in real time based on people’s interaction with the environment. Each traveler becomes a musical note, actively participating in the creation of an ever-changing sound and visual universe.

The technology makes it possible for sound, visual and lighting patterns to be modified with each step users take. Imagine that instead of hearing the usual subway noise, each step becomes part of a collective symphony, creating a welcoming and dynamic atmosphere.

Space for local musicians

One of the most notable features of this project is the space dedicated to local musicians. Known as ARS STAGE, this space allows members of the Association of Street and Underground Musicians of Barcelona (AMUC) to present their performances in optimal sound conditions. It’s not just about live music; performances will be enhanced with visual technology, offering musicians the opportunity to connect even more deeply with their audience.

A step towards the future of public transportation

The first deputy mayor, Laia Bonet, expressed her enthusiasm about how this project transforms the metro’s longest and most familiar interchange into something more “friendly and dynamic”. It is an example of how art and technology can transform public spaces into immersive and human experiences.

The financial contribution by the City Council and TMB, of approximately 50,000 euros plus an additional prize of 3,000 euros, shows the commitment to make the Barcelona metro a space for innovation. This collaboration includes companies, startups, research and innovation centers, universities, and has selected ARS GRACIA as the winner among 52 proposals.

Assessment and future of the project

The project will be implemented as a three-month pilot test starting in November, covering a specific section of the interchange. During this period, the organizers will monitor its impact and the level of acceptance among users. Prior to this, a technical test will be carried out to ensure that all accessibility regulations are met.

This venture not only encourages creativity and art in one of the busiest spaces in the city, but could also be the precursor of a more human Barcelona subway connected to its urban environment. If all goes well, the possibility of expanding this experience to other stations and lines is not ruled out, turning public transport into a living canvas of art and interaction.

With projects like ARS GRACIA, Barcelona demonstrates that its public transportation is not only a way of getting around, but also an experience that transforms and enriches the daily lives of its inhabitants. Stay tuned for this fantastic integration of art, technology and community, because it promises to forever change the way we experience the subway world.
