Barcelona will have the Plaça del l’Orgull LGBTIQ+. It is considered a claim of several neighborhood organizations of La Marina, which achieved that a square without name takes this new name.
What stands out most about this fact is that the Catalan capital is an open city that over the years has supported and defended the LGBTIQ+ community, despite various obstacles and detractors.
In fact, at the neighborhood level there are already different neighborhoods that have feminist and LGBTIQ+ associations that lead and promote the ideas of freedom and equality.
Although there is still a long way to go, little by little progress has been made as a society, according to these groups.
Barcelona to have a LGBTIQ+ Pride Square
It will be located at Passeig de la Zona Franca 189, Zona Franca district. It will be the first square in Barcelona to honor LGBTIQ+ Pride.
So far, in 2023, the proposal became a reality, as it had already been underway for more than two years.
At that time, various entities of La Marina met to coordinate the first Pride day in the neighborhood. At that moment they realized that a public space was needed where support for sexual and gender dissidence could be made visible.
The place chosen was Passeig de la Zona Franca 189, right where the Foneria metro stop is located, which also had no name until now.
Thus, in the coming weeks the place will be renamed Plaça del l’Orgull LGBTIQ+.
Official decision
The efforts bore fruit. In fact, the Official Gazette of the Province of Barcelona, BOPB, published the decision of the Nomenclature of the Streets of Barcelona adopted in the session of December 15, 2022.
It gives the name of Plaza de l’Orgull LGTBI+ to the number 189 of Passeig de la Zona Franca.
The decision was ratified last week by the Sants-Montjuïc district council. The agreement enters a 20-day public information period.
The Taula de Dones de la Marina, promoter of this new initiative in Barcelona, indicates that it will be a space for neighborhood and community participation in the neighborhood. It will be a good scenario to continue the efforts in favor of the feminist struggle and equal rights.
When the efforts began more than two years ago, it all started with the celebration of the first Pride Day in the neighborhood, in order to give visibility and vindicate the LGTBIQ+ community.
Since this event, the decision was made to continue the initiative. The celebration was repeated in 2021 (despite the pandemic), and in 2022 there was more support.
