The public transport landscape in Barcelona is set to undergo significant changes as we approach 2024.
The Autoritat del Transport Metropolità (ATM) has recently confirmed that it will maintain the 50% discount on public transport tickets at the beginning of next year.
This news has been received with relief by metro users, who will be able to enjoy this discount until the end of February 2024.
Barcelona’s public transport: 50% discount maintained
The MTA’s decision to extend the 50% discount on Barcelona metro tickets during the first months of 2024 is welcomed among residents and visitors to the city.
This measure is in addition to the current initiative, where the MTA contributes 20% of the rebate, and the State contributes the remaining 30%. With this collaboration, the prices of the T-Usual and T-Casual will remain at affordable levels for users.
Current prices of the T-Usual and T-Casual:
T-USUAL:
1 zone: 20 euros.
2 zones: 26,95 euros.
3 zones: 37,80 euros.
4 zones: 46,30 euros.
5 zones: 53,10 euros.
6 zones: 56,90 euros.
T-CASUAL:
1 zone: 11.35 euros.
2 zones: 22,40 euros.
3 zones: 30,50 euros.
4 zones: 39,20 euros.
5 zones: 45,05 euros.
6 zones: 47,90 euros.
Uncertainty for the remainder of the year 2024
Although the MTA has guaranteed the continuity of the discount in the first months of 2024, uncertainty persists for the rest of the year. The measures announced by the government for free public transport raise questions about the sustainability of the current discounts.
At present, there is a 50% discount, but the final decision on the future of these fares will depend on the deliberations of the central government and the MTA.
Prolongation of forfeiture of titles
The MTA has also announced a prolongation in the expiration of transport tickets acquired in 2023. Initially scheduled to expire on January 15, 2024, the new deadline has been postponed to February 29, 2024. This decision is intended to facilitate the transition to T-mobilitat securities.
For its part, the T-mobilitat is a modernized, rechargeable and contactless system that will progressively replace integrated transport tickets with magnetic stripe.
The MTA seeks to provide citizens with sufficient time to adapt to these innovations, ensuring a smooth transition to a more efficient and modern transportation system.
Public transport in Barcelona will undergo significant changes in 2024, from price adjustments to the introduction of more advanced ticketing systems.
Users and residents of the city will have to be attentive to the authorities’ decisions in order to know the new developments and adjust their transportation habits accordingly.
It is estimated that adjustments or related changes could occur during 2024, so it is necessary to be attentive to new guidelines that may emerge during the coming year.
